Bank of England Governor: Trump’s Policies Fuel Market Volatility

by admin477351

Andrew Bailey, the Bank of England governor, has stated that Donald Trump’s rapidly changing US trade policy is a significant driver of recent market volatility, which in turn contributes to the uncertainty surrounding UK interest rates. He told MPs that the “constellation” of falling equities, rising US bond yields, and a depreciating dollar needs careful observation.
He recounted past instances where such market conditions prompted policy responses from the US administration. While acknowledging that equity markets currently appear overly optimistic, he stressed the need for vigilance given the potential for shifts.
Despite the market turbulence, Bailey reiterated his expectation for a decline in UK wage growth in the coming months. This anticipated moderation in wage settlements is a key factor that could empower the Monetary Policy Committee to consider further interest rate reductions.
