After two decades, Denmark has secured a seat on the United Nations Security Council, starting January 1, 2025, marking a significant milestone in its diplomatic journey. This achievement follows years of persistent campaigning under various governments and reflects widespread international support from fellow UN member states.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen hailed the development as a pivotal moment for Danish foreign policy. “This is a proud day. In a world facing complex crises and fractured relations, Denmark is ready to champion dialogue, foster cooperation, and work tirelessly for peaceful solutions,” he said.
Denmark’s term will coincide with the UN’s 80th anniversary and the selection of the next Secretary-General, placing the country at the heart of key global decisions. As a Council member, Denmark has pledged to uphold international law and contribute constructively to Security Council reform, with a commitment to transparency and inclusiveness.
The Danish agenda focuses on three urgent global challenges: rethinking conflict prevention in light of modern threats, addressing climate change’s impact on peace and security, and advancing the women, peace, and security agenda. These priorities underscore Denmark’s vision of a safer, more just world.
