Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has set a new record as the longest continuously serving administration in the history of the Italian Republic, marking 1,413 consecutive days in office. This milestone surpasses the previous record of 1,412 days held by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s second government from 2001 to 2005. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan extended his congratulations to Meloni, emphasizing his optimism for the continued strengthening of ties between Türkiye and Italy.
Meloni, who became Italy’s first female prime minister in October 2022, has fostered a close relationship with Erdoğan. The two leaders regularly engage in discussions focusing on bilateral and regional issues, underscoring their commitment to expanding cooperation in various sectors. These include trade, investment, defence, energy, and migration, with a particular focus on coordinating efforts in regions like Libya and Ukraine.
In April 2025, Meloni and Erdoğan co-chaired the fourth Türkiye-Italy Intergovernmental Summit in Rome, a significant event leading to the signing of several agreements aimed at bolstering their strategic and economic partnership. This summit served as a platform for both nations to align their interests and enhance collaboration across multiple domains.
Most recently, the leaders met during the NATO summit held in Ankara in July. This meeting was an opportunity for Meloni and Erdoğan to reaffirm their plans to elevate trade and mutual investment, as well as to enhance cooperation in defence and other strategic sectors. Their ongoing dialogue and partnership reflect a shared vision for deeper bilateral relations.
