Türkiye is taking a leading role in sharing its expertise in disaster health management with the global community, emphasizing the crucial need for international cooperation in safeguarding lives during major emergencies. Speaking at the World Health Organization’s Ministerial Conference focused on “Protecting Health in Earthquakes – Strengthening Health Security Through Earthquake Emergency Management” held in Istanbul, Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu highlighted the global nature of earthquake challenges, stressing the importance of scientific collaboration and international solidarity. The event gathered delegates from approximately 40 nations to explore ways to enhance disaster preparedness and bolster healthcare systems against earthquakes and other emergencies.
Memişoğlu pointed to Türkiye’s extensive experience in disaster response, particularly in the wake of the devastating February 2023 earthquakes that led to the deployment of over 138,000 healthcare personnel, emergency responders, and support staff. During that crisis, Türkiye conducted one of its largest-ever medical evacuation operations, moving more than 51,000 patients to hospitals beyond the disaster zone and swiftly setting up field hospitals and emergency medical facilities. These efforts have been underpinned by significant investments in strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure, including resilient hospitals, emergency medical services, digital health systems, air ambulance operations, and the National Medical Rescue Teams (UMKE).
One of the key innovations showcased was the GÖKBEY ambulance helicopter, a domestically developed aircraft designed to deliver intensive care in challenging terrains during disasters. Looking towards future preparedness, Türkiye is focusing on enhancing its readiness for potential major earthquakes, particularly in the high-risk Marmara region. In this regard, the country has introduced a comprehensive earthquake preparedness model, which includes what is claimed to be the world’s first Public Health Services in Earthquakes Guide, outlining detailed response plans for Istanbul and other vulnerable areas.
Memişoğlu reiterated Türkiye’s ongoing commitment to assisting disaster-affected countries by sharing its expertise, trained personnel, and emergency response capabilities. He underscored that no nation can tackle large-scale disasters in isolation, highlighting the necessity of collaborative efforts to effectively manage such challenges. Through these initiatives, Türkiye aims to contribute significantly to global disaster response and preparedness, emphasizing that international solidarity is essential for protecting lives in the face of natural calamities.
