Spotify Labels AI Artists, Excludes Them From Recommendations

by admin477351

Starting in September, Spotify will implement new strategies to identify and manage AI-generated artists on its platform. These AI-created artist identities will be marked with an “AI persona” label on both their profiles and track listings. This initiative aims to help listeners differentiate between authentic musicians and artificial artist identities, while also safeguarding real performers from losing visibility due to AI-generated content.

In a bid to promote genuine artists, Spotify announced that AI personas will be excluded by default from personalized recommendations. This move addresses the growing presence of AI-generated music and emphasizes the platform’s commitment to authenticity. Spotify will not only allow artists to voluntarily label their AI-generated identities but will also employ human reviewers and AI tools to detect those that go undisclosed.

The decision comes amid a significant increase in AI-generated music, highlighting the need for greater transparency as generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry. Spotify has previously reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period, underscoring the flood of artificial and low-quality content infiltrating music platforms. This step is part of Spotify’s broader effort to maintain the integrity and quality of its music offerings.

As generative AI continues to evolve, the demand for clarity about whether an artist is human or machine-generated is growing among listeners. Spotify’s approach reflects a broader industry trend towards transparency, ensuring that users can make informed choices about the content they consume and support. By implementing these measures, Spotify aims to strike a balance between embracing technological advancements and preserving the exposure and recognition of genuine artists.
