At the Second Communication Council in Ankara, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed concerns over the increasing power of social media algorithms, which he termed as “algorithm fascism.” He highlighted the challenge these digital tools present in distinguishing between truth and misinformation, warning that they are significantly shaping public opinion. Erdoğan pointed out that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and communication technologies have not only transformed how information is shared but also facilitated the spread of disinformation.
Erdoğan emphasized the potential danger social media poses to cultural values and social cohesion by influencing how people perceive events and even altering historical narratives. He argued that the manipulation of public opinion through these platforms could blur the lines between fact and perception, making it harder for individuals to discern reality.
The Communication Council, as Erdoğan explained, seeks to craft Türkiye’s future communication strategy by gathering input from a diverse array of stakeholders, including government officials, academics, media representatives, and civil society experts. The event aims to fortify public communication policies in alignment with the country’s long-term goals and vision.
In his address, Erdoğan also mentioned the ongoing investigation into the Ahbap charity. He noted that authorities are legally pursuing those accused of betraying public trust in the aftermath of the 2023 earthquakes, holding them accountable for their actions.
