The attack, claimed by Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree, targeted key strategic assets at the Sharurah military base, including weapons depots and command-and-control centers. Saudi authorities reported that a projectile landed near the Yemeni border, injuring two individuals and causing damage to a mosque and multiple buildings.
Simultaneously, Yemeni government forces have ramped up their offensive against Houthi positions, conducting three airstrikes in the Taiz region. These strikes were aimed at Houthi locations and armaments near the Red Sea port city of Mocha. This surge in military activity follows a week-long Houthi offensive that has allowed them to capture significant areas along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and several strategic islands. As a result, the Houthis have strengthened their control near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime passage at the Red Sea’s southern entrance.
Adding to the tension, the Houthis have declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Red Sea ports, raising alarms about potential disruptions to regional shipping and energy supplies. This development is particularly concerning for Saudi Arabia, which heavily relies on the waterway for its oil exports, especially given the ongoing disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia continues to back Yemen’s internationally recognized government, while the Houthis maintain their alignment with Iran, exacerbating regional tensions.
The recent escalation in hostilities has also triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands of people fleeing their homes as the fighting intensifies. Displaced civilians are facing significant challenges in finding shelter in safer areas. The United Nations has reported a marked increase in displacement since July, with the latest clashes resulting in over 500 fatalities. This ongoing violence threatens to further deepen Yemen’s already dire humanitarian situation and destabilize the broader Red Sea region.
